Fabric Consumption Calculation System in the Garments Industry

A Fabric Consumption Calculation System is a helpful tool for anyone who works with fabric, from home sewing processes to professional garment manufacturers. It can help you estimate how much fabric you need for a project, which can save you money and reduce waste. In this article, we explain the Fabric Consumption Calculation System in the Garments Industry in detail.

Types of Fabric Consumption Calculation System

The quantity of fabric which is required to produce a garment is called consumption. Whatever quantity is required to produce a garment. We can know it through marker planning and mathematical systems. We can calculate and determine the fabric consumption by the following two systems:

  1. Marking or marker planning system.
  2. Mathematical system.

1. Marker Planning System:

In the system mentioned here studying the range of size. The following six pics of six sizes can be sorted out from the size range. As in XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL . Besides these we can choose three pcs of three size or twelve pcs of twelve size for our convenience. It Depends on our intelligence and the size range, thereafter paper pattern can be made by grading the above garments as per the measurements sheet.

Having made the paper pattern it should have to lay each part of the paper pattern on a market paper of similar fabric width. After making the paper pattern we measure the marker paper length. We will find an aggregate consumption of six pcs of garment. If the aggregate is divided by six, we will find a consumption of one pcs garment. As such we will find a consumption of one dozen garments from the above system calculations.

2. Mathematical System:

Whatever is the fabric consumption of a garment or whatever quantity of fabric is required to produce a garment is measured by mathematical system. A mathematical system is a system of rough estimation. Consumption of a sample garment or consumption as per measurement sheet is calculated mathematically by measuring the area or length and width of each part of each garment. CAD and marker-making software help the calculation process.

Here are some additional factors to consider for accurate fabric consumption calculation:

  • Fabric Type: Woven fabrics (with a grain) may require directional cutting, affecting layout. Knit fabrics (more flexible) can offer more layout options.
  • Seam Allowances: Different seam allowances (e.g., for flat felling vs. French seams) will affect fabric usage.
  • Pattern Matching: Striped or patterned fabrics may require extra fabric to ensure pattern continuity across garment pieces.
  • Safety Margin: It’s wise to add a buffer to your calculations to account for potential cutting errors or shrinkage.

By considering these factors and using a fabric consumption calculation system, you can ensure you have enough fabric for your buyer’s PO without wasting material.
